In this module we’ll talk about the 7 Types of Difficult People you’re going to have to deal with. Knowing the type will allow you to better understand what might be going on in the background. I’ll highlight the types of behaviors and attitudes they’ll display.
Once we’ve identified the type of person, we then have to understand the psychology that is driving or underlying those bad behaviors or negative attitudes. Understand the why gets us close to knowing how to deal with or assuage their concerns. We’ll also address what I call Dialogue Dos – Don’ts; things to say or avoid saying. More importantly, we’ll get into reading people’s body language to gauge receptivity and understanding.
Once we’ve identified the type and have a good understanding of what is causing the behaviors (or poor attitude), I’m going to show you 10 ways to deal with difficult people and diffuse an antagonistic situation. Each approach will vary depending on the type of person you’re dealing with. And finally, if you’ve exhausted all the persuasion, influence and/or conversational techniques and are still left with a difficult person, I’m going to provide you with 3 corrective measures you can take as a last-ditch effort to rescue this person from themselves.
