This weekend, I watched the documentary “An Honest Liar” about the life and times of the ‘Amazing Randi’ (real name James Randi), a magician and self-professed deceiver of the human mind. Randi is a magician and escape artist on par with or better than the Great Harry Houdini.

He dedicated his life to his craft and mastered every aspect of deception. But Randi admits up front that he will be deceiving you (i.e., he’s an honest liar). Randi began his crusade against ‘Dishonest Liars’: psychics who used deception not for entertainment purposes but to give people false hope, take their money, or both!

The documentary highlights three interesting cases:

I Can Move Objects!   James Hydrick claimed he had the power of telekinesis, the ability to move objects with his mind. BUSTED: He was shown to be using his breath to move pages and pencil during a live episode of “That's My Line,” hosted by Bob Barker.

I Know What You’re Thinking!   Uri Geller claimed he could read your mind and even find objects that were hidden. For example, in a set of metal cylinders sitting on a tray, Geller could tell you which one contained the hidden object (e.g., a metal ball). BUSTED: Randi showed that Geller was simply moving the tray and watching which cylinder shifted to determine which one contained the metal ball.  No psychic power there!

On the Johnny Carson show failing to find the iron ball in the container.

God Speaks to Me!  The evangelist Peter Popoff could pick a random audience member and know their name, backstory, and current illness, and then he would proceed to ‘heal’ them. How? God was working through him! BUSTED: Randi demonstrated that many of the members had filled out surveys/questionnaires before entering the venue, in which they divulged key information. Popoff’s wife would then transmit this information to him via radio frequency through an RF receiver he had in his ear.

The real shocker for me came towards the end of the documentary. Randi had spent a good deal of his life revealing these ‘charlatans’ who were taking advantage of others.

Yet, during a talk show tour, the audience members attacked HIM verbally for not being a ‘believer’ first! Here was a man debunking (proving frauds were fakes) and revealing liars, and the audience was mad at him—not the deceivers!

James Hydrick (Mr. Telekinesis) later admitted that he learned the trick (moving objects) in prison and didn’t learn it from a Chinese master as he had once claimed.

Hydrick said, "My whole idea behind this was to see how dumb America was. How dumb the world is."

I never understood how people could fall for these types of claims:

- Get 100,000 subscribers in 30 days

- I can help you make six figures in three months

- Work only two hours a day and live like a millionaire

- Retire by 40 with our Wealth Accelerator program

- Become a top performer with little or no effort

Hydrick understood what The Amazing Randi and I struggled to grasp: ‘Weak minds crave deception.’
